This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.
I put off reading this book because I’m the weird type of person to not read a book just because of the hype. As you can see, I ended up caving and I’m glad I did.

Mare is a great character. She may not be my usual strong heroine, but she wasn’t a total whiner. She was well rounded, believable, and a bit likable (though at times, I really wanted to just smack some sense into her). The important line in the book talked about betrayal and while I, myself, blindly ignored it, when it all came down to the real reveal, I was like WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, MARE. HOW COULD YOU?

I finished this book in a day. There was just always something going on that made it hard to put the book down. It was slow at work, so I read and would get so mad when I had to stop to actually do work, which, in my opinion, qualifies it for the rating I give it.

Action-packed with a twist reveal had me immediately purchasing Glass Sword and I honestly can’t wait to see where this goes. I now understand the hype!
